Obituary of Stanley T. Filipski
Please share a memory of Stanley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Life is what you celebrate. All of it. Even its end. Our Dad, Stanley T. Filipski (Pete) ended his journey on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2016 at St. Camillus Nursing Home. He was born on May 8, 1926 to Polish immigrant parents and attended Sacred Heart School. In June 1990 he attended his 8th grade 50th Reunion-Class of 1940. He nostalgically remembered the 40’s as a time when you could go to a 5 and 10 Cent store and actually buy something for 5 or 10 cents. Before completing his senior year at Sacred Heart he left school to enlist in the Navy. Unfortunately, the recruiter had other plans and he boarded the Queen Mary for Europe as an Army Private. He operated a tank during World War II, was at the Battle of the Bulge, and was honorably discharged as Sergeant. After the war he was a member of the American Legion Pulaski Post 1650 where he tended bar and served as a Chaplain. In the fall of 1950 he married Anna Selewacz and celebrated 46 years of marriage before her death in 1996. They had 2 children, Michael and Christine, who both earned their Master Degree and became teachers, He retired from Carrier Corp, 38 years as a certified welder.Stanley was very generous with his time and was known as “Stan the Man of Sheraton Rd,” as he mowed and snow-blowed most of the street. Neighbors were happy to see him push his machines toward their homes. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading the whole newspaper, and in later years golf. But what he loved most was his family, and he adored and doted on his 4 grandkids and 5 great- grandkids. To them, he was the magical grandfather (Papa), who always said yes when their parents said no.But what he will always be remembered for was his bold, joking personality and his ability to keep us all laughing. Wherever he went he told his jokes, and to keep you laughing and remembering, he always left you with a copy.Stanley was preceded in death by his wife, Anna (Selewacz) and 4 brothers.Surviving to honor his memory are his daughter, Christine (Chiappone) son-in-law, Donald Chiappone, his son Michael and daughter-in-law Teresa, 4 grandchildren: Breanne (Chiappone) and Andrew Wright, Daniel Chiappone, Tim and Kristen (Filipski) Dougherty, and John Filipski and his wife Diana. He has 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 30th at 10am at St. Patrick’s Church, 216 N. Lowell Ave. in Syracuse, NY 13204. Services will follow at the Veterans Cemetery on Howlett Hill Rd. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s Church 216 N. Lowell Ave Syracuse NY 13204.
