I left Syracuse and the choir at the Cathedral two years ago. I now reside in Hong Kong. For some reason I found myself thinking of Duane earlier today, so I googled his name and saw that he passed away three days ago. I firmly believe that he wanted me to know that he had passed. A kindlier, gentler man I have never known, and a true Christian in every sense of the word. Requiescat in pace Magister.

Part 2:
"When in our music God is glorified,
and adoration leaves no room for pride,
it is as though the whole creation cried
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
How often making music we have found
a new dimension in the world of sound,
as worship moved us to a new profound
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
So has the church in liturgy and song,
In faith and love through centuries of wrong,
borne witness to the truth in every tongue,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
And did not Jesus sing a song that night
when utmost evil strove against the light?
Then let us sing for whom he won the fight,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Let every instrument be tuned for praise!
Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise!
And may God give us faith to sing always
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!"

It is only fitting that I learn the news of Duane's passing on the Eve of Pentecost! Tonight I sang the Saturday vigil mass at the Church of the Epiphany here in Pittsburgh, as I have been for nearly fourteen years now, but tonight's mass was truly special; I fondly recalled learning the ministry of cantoring, soloing, and leading song at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse under Duane's expertise some 20 years ago. He was indeed a gentleman, scholar, fine musician, teacher and friend. Perhaps the following hymn might be a way of expressing my thanks!

Dear Sutton Family-
Your Dad was a genius musician whose talent included training and supporting a great many diverse musicians be they vocalists or instrumentalists. He offered his expertise in a friendly and professional manner. My own daughters were inspired and encouraged by him. His faith and devotion to prayerful liturgy was evident at each and every mass. The clergy and Cathedral community were truly blessed to have the gifts of Duane's integrity, great musicianship and caring for all.
With sincere sympathy,
Catherine S. Ranieri

Sutton family--my prayers are with you all in your saddness. Duane was a wonderful teacher. My 2 teenage daughters came into Syracuse from Constantia for several years to participate in the Diocesan oragnist training program, with much success. He was so encouraging and supportive. We as a family were blessed to have shared his life and talents.

Your father was a client of ours for many years. He will be missed as we would catch up on our children and grandchildren while doing his taxes for him. He was a great person. May the peace of God be with you always.

I offer all of you my deepest condolences on Duane's death. He was a special human being: kind, warm, and compassionate. He was a patient and helpful organ instructor and always offered encouragement when it seemed that nothing "clicked."
The Cathedral will be a much different place without him, and the Diocese of Syracuse lost an enthusiastic, humble, and loyal servant.
God bless you all with memories to cherish and the joy of knowing Duane had a life well-lived.

I had the pleasure to serve as a Cantor with Duane on a couple of occasions early in my musical career. He was a very talented organist and conductor and was a very good mentor to me and to others. He was a good shepherd of the Cathedral program, bringing diverse people together to make music to the glory of God.
He will be missed in the Community and in the Diocese.
My sincerest condolences.
