I am saddened to hear of John Oberbrunner's passing, and thankful that I was able to work with John (Mr. Oberbrunner to so many of us!) Studying with him for over eight years, he transformed this clarinet and saxophone player into a true flutist and not just a doubler who plays the flute. Every single time I've put my flute together to play, I think of him. When I informed him I had just purchased an alto flute, he insisted I join his Central New York Flute Choir. What an experience!
Over the years, meeting other flute students of John's, we would tell stories of our private and group lesson experiences, all with great appreciation. And we'd laughed about all of us owning every Kuhlau duet, Thom Ritter George Canonic Sonatas, Donjon, Karg-Elert, Altes, and all the solo literature...on and on.
It was not unusual for flute judges to take me aside and compliment on the quality of my students' performances. This owing to John's ability not only to teach flute, but to show so many of us HOW to successfully teach the instrument to others. And I always gave him the credit for that. For all of us who had the honor to work with and learn from him, he will be greatly missed.
Condolences to his family.

I met Mr Oberbrunner as a young Junior High student in the late 60’s when my parents thought he would be a good flute teacher for me. His low voice and tall stature always intimidated me but I did what he asked. He prepared me to go apply/audition for the Crane School of Music which became my Alma Mater. He prepared me so well. I never knew until I became a private flute teacher myself how much he taught me. All my books had and still have his notes in them. They are invaluable. As an adult when I attended the Skidmore Flute Festival he was always so happy to see me and was so complimentary. I founded the Capital Area Flute Club in the Albany area and our group participated for many years. He was a great teacher and supporter. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing. I hope there will be a public memorial at some point where I can attend and express my gratitude in person. My heart and thoughts are with his family.

John would always bring his students to my Skidmore Flute Festival. In rehearsals and coachings, his flutistic and musical insight and ideas were always welcomed by everyone. I have warm memories of his contagious enthusiasm and deep passion for music and the flute. I am so sorry for your loss, Jan Vinci (Skidmore College).

Brad Benson and I had the pleasure of getting to know John and Carol singing madrigals at the home of a mutual friend. Of course we also had the pleasure of hearing him play often with the SSO. What a gift John was to the arts community of his chosen home town, for so many many years. May his memory be eternal.

I was a flute student of Mr. Oberbrunner at SU. I was a music student and was thrilled to study with him. What a wealth of information he was and so exacting. I was a music teacher for 39 years and would often use his teaching technics. He was a wonderful teacher and so influential in the music community. He will be sorely missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I was one of hundreds of Mr. Oberbrunner's private flute students in the 70s. My dad would drive me to my weekly lessons until I could drive myself. I'm grateful for the guidance and patience Mr. Oberbrunner had in his teaching. I am still playing my flute 46 years after my last lesson with him.
Thank you for the lifetime gift of music.
May God bless his memory and his family.

I met John Oberbrunner in 1957. I was six years old. By that age I had developed a fair idea of how to play the drums. So one day my first grade classroom got a visit from a guy in a snappy uptown black suit. It was Mr. Oberbrunner. Well, the rest is history. He certainly remains to this day my first musical mentor. He was a really cool guy and I have spoken with him several times over the years. I will never forget his tutelage, his extraordinary abilities with a flute, and his patience with thousands of students in Syracuse.
My heart goes out to all who knew and loved him, especially his dear wife. I know that John’s life’s work will remain with many - as all our lives go forward. Miss you.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of an amazing, caring individual. I was a trumpet student of his at Ed Smith Elementary, and Levy Jr. High. He was the reason during my teenager years, I stayed on the straight and narrow. Looking back, I thank him for being the educator who really cared for all his students. He gave me my love of brass instruments, symphonic, and jazz. Those of us who studying under him were blessed and motivated to become better and better everyday.
May the wonderful memories help you through this time.

I am very sorry for your loss and at the same time extremely grateful for having taken private flute lessons with Mr Oberbrunner through HS.
He taught me discipline, patience and perseverance in his very kind way.
I didn’t always want to go to my scheduled lessons because they would take me away from some fun or social activity but once I was there I was totally engrossed by and appreciative of having spent time with such a brilliant and talented being.
Peace to you.

I was a fan of John’s playing from the Late 1960s until his retirement, and also awaited the annual SFCM concert of young artists he created and which will hopefully live on. He leaves his amazing and accomplished family. We have noted his absence , with Carol, in the balcony at recent Symphoria concerts. How meaningful to have provided such listening pleasure for many Syracusans.

To the family of John Oberbrunner,
I shed a few tears of incredible gratitude for the life of Mr. Oberbrunner, my private flute teacher from 1958-1966! His kindness and commitment to teaching was unfathomable. His weekly lessons that consisted of scales, etudes, duet, and solos laid the foundation for my career as a teacher and performer of solo, chamber and orchestral music. Along the way, I developed as a singer and teacher of voice as well and the thoroughness of my lessons with Mr. Oberbrunner when I was a youth have influenced my teaching of this instrument as well.
Mr. Oberbrunner’s influence has been profound in my life’s journey in my work for 8 years In Boston and 40 years as a college teacher. I am forever grateful.
May God’s light shine eternally on him and may God’s love surround your family.

I was a trumpet student of Mr. Oberbrunner during the late '50's to early '60's at Edward Smith. He was a great teacher with high standards for his students. He instructed the band members regarding the etiquette of performance. No tapping of feet to the beat while performing individually or in band performance. I was sorry to lose him as a teacher when my family moved away. He also patiently waited with elementary students in the lunch line the day he was at Edward Smith instructing instrumental students. In my 6th grade mind that elevated him him to the top. I still believe that.

Family and Friends of John Oberbrunner:
During the 1950's, was a student of the trumpet, conducted by John, at the Danforth Elementary School, located on West Kennedy Street, in Syracuse, N.Y. During that time, for 1-2 years, he also gave me trumpet lessons at the DeSantis Music Store and Studios, located on South Salina Street.
Still a music lover, though. As a listener and not a performer. John would be pleased to learn.
May your period of bereavement and grief be, mercifully, short. God bless you all.

Mr. Oberbrunner taught me flute both privately and at Corcoran. He really improved my tone and fingering which led to a great score at competition. I also was allowed the chance to play in the Syracuse Symphony summer orchestra. What a great person and teacher.

So sorry to hear about John's passing, but what an amazing life he led! My only direct interaction with him was over twenty years ago, when I lucked into an invitation to one of the Oberbrunner's annual Christmas parties at their home, where guests sang the Handel Messiah, all the way through. I remember feeling privileged to be in such talented and inspired musical company, and it was an evening I'll never forget. Just one small, but memorable, example of the type of man he was.
My sincere condolences to the entire family.
