Obituary of Marvin Bartholomew

Please share a memory of Marvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
February 8, 2014 Marvin “Marty” F. Bartholomew passed away peacefully on Saturday at home surrounded by those he loved. Marty grew up in the Bronx, but has been an Upstater ever since attending college in Oswego, NY. (BS, MA, CAS). A consummate educator, Marty worked for over 30 years in the Syracuse City School District – first teaching mathematics at H. W. Smith (junior high school) and then at Nottingham High School. At Nottingham he coached football and softball, and also immersed himself in both computer education (when Apple IIe’s were current technology) and photography (a passion of his since he was young). For many years he also organized the school’s ski club in order to spend almost every wintery evening zooming down the slopes at Labrador Mountain. He finished his career with the district teach teachers how to integrate everything from video to PowerPoint into the learning environment. Marty loved being active – handball, racquetball, skiing, rollerblading, kayaking and all manner of other shenanigans that could get and keep him outside. He also loved creating things – dabbling in stained glass, cabinet making, and macramé (he was a man of the 1970s). Of late he was active in his church, being an usher and attending the Saint Jude Novena almost weekly. Marty is survived by his loving wife, Emily Anne (also of the Bronx), and daughters Amy Marie (Eric) Koehl (East Syracuse), and Jenni (Cleveland, OH), and two grandchildren (Grace Emily and Edward Daniel) whom he adored. Above all, Marty was a good man who led a good and full life. He will be deeply missed by all who were privileged to know him.Calling Hours: Wednesday 4 to 7 PM Hollis Funeral Home 1105 W.
