I was sad to learn of Joe's death. Less then 4 weeks ago he had emailed me about a book he wanted to work on, and I was hoping to meet up with him to discuss it when I returned to Syracuse next week. For those who don't know me, I was one of Joe's first students back in 1966 when I came to Syracuse to get a PhD in a new graduate program he was starting at the Laboratory of Sensory Communication. He was my teacher and mentor and later on friend as I joined the faculty at the Institute for Sensory Research which he was founding director. He was a great example as a teacher and scientist to so many of us, and it would not be an understatement to say that aside from my immediate family he was the person I had the most interactions with of anyone I knew, and my life and scientific career was so greatly enriched by knowing him and learning from him.
Please accept my sincere condolences, and
may his memory be for a blessing.
