April 10, 2013 Katherine Eloise Steves, 91, loving wife and dedicated mother ,died peacefully Wednesday at Loretto Nursing Home with family by her side. Katherine (Kate) was born in Syracuse and lived in Mattydale for over 60 years. As a homemaker, her family was her top priority. Grandma Kate’s passion was cooking and baking which was evident by the constant smell of chocolate and cinnamon throughout her kitchen. Kate was a woman of tremendous faith as an active member of St. Margaret’s parish, former president of the Altar and Rosary Society and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She and her husband captured the hearts of hundreds of children in their role as Mrs. Claus and Santa. Kate is predeceased by her parents, Will and Kitty Young and her five brothers and sisters. Kate is survived by her husband of 68 years, Robert J. Steves, Sr.,and her eleven children, Robert (Kathleen) of Scarsdale, NY, Mary of Florida, Helen of California, James (Debra) of Syracuse, Eloise Smarrelli (John) of Tennessee, Margaret Guarino (James) of Rhode Island, Elizabeth Forgays of Florida, Theresa (Walter) Vaga of Syracuse, Thomas (Debra) of Skaneateles, John (Diane) , Daniel (Judy) of California. Kate is also survived by 24 grandchildren , nine great-grandchildren, her brother; Joseph Q. Young, and a very dear family friend, Mary Sferre, sfcc and many nieces and nephews. Calling Hours: Sunday 3 to 7 PM in St. Margaret’s Church Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Funeral Services: Monday 10 AM in St. Margaret’s Church Donations may be made to St. Margaret’s Faith Formation.
