My condolences to the Zales family. John had lots of wonderful talents and was a marvelous companion under the right circumstances. I spent many a happy time with him teaching at Solvay, wandering around Syracuse, and meeting up in NYC. Yet, as we all know, he had so many things that weighed him down throughout his life as well. He had great potential and equally great flaws. That is not news to anyone who might be reading this note. But, at his best, John was a gracious, generous, intelligent, and caring person who enjoyed life--sometimes far too much. I have many happy memories of times together with John and was sorry to witness his decline in later years. But, it is the John who was full of life that I will remember, the John who made you laugh and sometimes cry. My best to Michael and Jo-Ann. I know that the last years have been difficult and frustrating. Les
