August 15, 2011 Walter John Solak of Syracuse passed away peacefully on Monday, August 15th at St. Camillus. Born in Syracuse in 1917, he attended Sacred Heart School, Vocational High School, Alfred University and graduated from Syracuse University and Simmons School of Mortuary Science. He was employed by the Post Office and retired in 1980. He was predeceased by his sister Angela Solak Romocki who passed away in 2001. He was a communicant of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its' Holy Name Society; a member of Polish Home, the Polish Heritage Club, Sacred Heart and St. Stephens Seniors and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He served in the CBI Theater of WW ll and his years in service led to a lasting interest in Veterans programs. He was a life member of the VFW and American Legion Post 41, as well as its' Chaplain, a member of PAV, past Commander of CBIVA, Vice-Commander and Chaplain of PLAV Post 14, past Jr. Vice Commander of PLAV NYS Department, a member of VAVS, and a member of Onondaga County Veterans' Council and Memorial Association of Syracuse and Onondaga County. He served these organizations in various capacities but his favorite was that of Chaplain. He was a lifetime student who participated in many Elder-hostel programs throughout the US, Canada, Hawaii and Alaska. He studied at the Polish Institute in Rome, Italy, a course which culminated in an audience with Pope John Paul II. This was one of the most memorable experiences of his life. His love of learning, literature, history, travel and photography enriched the lives of his family, friends and fellow veterans. He greatly enjoyed arranging annual trips to Washington, DC to honor the memory of Brigadier General Vladimir Krzyzanowski, a valiant fighter in the American Civil War. The impressive ceremonies at his grave site in Arlington National Cemetery and at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier included a prayer given by him as Chaplain, and left a lasting impression on the group. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene Socha Solak, and children Rene, Alicia, James, Mark and their spouses, and grandchildren Taylor, Morgan, Joshua, Emilee and Marek, and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express our appreciation for the wonderful care Walter received at St. Camillus. Special thanks go out to the entire staff in Unit D, with heartfelt appreciation to Brenda, Todd, Dionne and Becky. Calling hours: Thursday 4 to 7 pm at Hollis Funeral Home 1105 W.
