I don't know if anyone will see this. I was Bob's roommate our senior year at Penn (1970 -1971). We would take long late night walks and talk. We wrote letters back and forth after we graduated and were in med school. He also visited me in Santa Barbara, I think in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Then we lost touch. I have been going through old letters and came across his letters, which led to searching for him, and learned he had passed almost 5 years ago.
Ironically I am writing this during this pandemic, and I viewed the video where he was speaking about ebola.
I am sad we won't be able to reconnect in this life.

I just learned of Bob's passing. What a loss! We trained over 40 fellows in Pediatric Critical Care in my time, and Bob was among the very best. His warmth, intelligence, compassion, wit and impish streak were appreciated by all who knew him. We kept in touch for about fifteen years after he went back to Syracuse, but then my career drifted in a new direction, and we stopped communicating. The loss is mine. We all miss him.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of Bob. He was a great physician, intensivist, and one of the nicest human beings I had the privilege to work with. I never will forget Bob's first day in the PICU at Children's. He was standing bedside, presenting on rounds at the bedside of a patient admitted by Neurosurgery. The attending Neurosurgeon (an adult anorexic) came up behind him and pulled on his pony tail and wanted to know who he was. He was too much of a kind soul to turn around and belt her and took it in stride.
My condolences to Deborah and the family.
He will be missed. Rest in peace my friend

I'm still tempted to grab a slide rule to make calculations, but I don't remember how to operate one, let alone find one. To Deb and the kids - no one feels the pain and grief more, but Bob would want all of us to be resilient, and keep finding the right path. Love ya, Emma, Tom, Trevor and Christopher.

On behalf of my family we would like to express out deep pain in the loss of such an awesome person and Pediatric ICU Doctor. Sixteen years ago almost to the exact date Dr. Kanter was one critical member of the most incredible teams of doctors, nurses, technicians and staff at University Hospital. Thanks to Dr. Kanter and his team as well as God's grace, they saved our daughter Anna's life. That was just a couple of days before her 6th birthday in 2000. She is a now healthy young woman, ready to graduate from SUNY New Paltz next month. In a most fitting and powerful connection - Dr. Kanter passed away on our daughter Anna's birthday, March 29th. May his family know how much we appreciated Robert's impact on our lives during those most difficult days and months of 2000. We will never forget Roberts gentle and wise ways. May a peace that passes all understanding be yours during this time.

Bob Kanter's spirit remains as stron as ever, no longer bound by illness which he fought as he lived life: with strength, dignity and patience. I am honored to be his friend, colleague and student for 35 years. Whether he inspired by his role model, his compassion, his willingness to educate at all levels, or one of his many other positive dimensions, he gave us all a great gift by his presence. We have stayed in contact since our first meeting in 1981 until the last chance I had to see him, Deborah and their adult children in late 2015. It was always challenging to be his student because he took you further than you ever thought possible to find answers or become a finer physician. I am forever grateful for this highly spirited Renaissance physician to have been my educator, then colleague and friend. I am very sorry to not be there to celebrate Bob's life with you, but I am there in spirit to continue to celebrate Bob's accomplishments and contributions to making the world a better place. Seems as though we never did anything else. Jonny could hit and pitch!Beyond the backyard was Paradise. Very few deer then, but there were snakes and turtles. Bob could get me laughing hysterically! Carryback did not win the Triple Crown, but it really was not my fault! Bob found a beautiful Native American arrowhead just yards from the front door. Cuban missile crisis and other crises... then we were just like Ben Cartwright and his three boys. Frank, or Pa, listened to Mozart's Don Giovanni on Sundays and read the foot thick NY Times.Dione Warwick for his Senior Prom. Bob ferried half the wrestling team home, drove me to my summer jobs. Buffalo Springfield. Bob's first commandment to me: Don't take any #@%* from anyone!!! When my family had serious health problems, Bob and I spent hours on the Phone. Bob's last mail to me expressed his constant worry about me working in Brussels. Deborah, Caitlin, David and Anna, hugs from Tom, Agnes, Paul and Noam Jonathan Kanter

When I first joined the department as their new Peds Residency Coordinator at Upstate, I couldn't type, didn't know any medical terminology, and had never used a computer. So, they assigned me to Dr. Kanter (lucky him – haha). But he was absolutely wonderful to work with. He was very patient and kind, and I realized that as long as someone really wanted to learn, he really wanted to teach them. Over the next 25 years I heard over and over again how much the residents loved and respected him. And the world is a better place today because of all of the pediatricians who had the privilege of learning from him. My thoughts and prayers are with his beloved Deborah and family.

Please accept my sympathy. I am saddened by the passing of your husband, and your children's father, Dr. Kanter. I will always remember Bob fondly. I feel lucky that I had the pleasure of working with him when he first joined Upstate as director of our Pediatric ICU and for years after... He had a pony tail then, not much gray and wore Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers. I was the "5C" child-life specialist for Upstate Medical Centers pediatric hematology oncology. Over decades I had the privilege to witness the profound impact he made saving children's lives and caring for those who could not be saved. At first meeting, parents were sometimes taken a back by Bob's relaxed look, but soon rest assured realizing his brilliance and dedication. Dr. Frank Oski, and so many trailblazers that he recruited for Syracuse have now gone before us. Those left behind have learned from your husband's guidance, involvement, advocacy and support. These will continue to be key to success in addressing child health needs. His legacy lives on in all those he worked with and taught. Dr. Robert Keene Kanter will be very missed. My condolences to his loved ones, friends and colleagues. I worked in as a secretary in Pediatrics for 25+ years having the opportunity to do a few little chores here and there for him. He always treated me with the same respect and gratitude that he would have treated someone of Dr Oski's status. We would talk baseball with Dr Weinberger all season. The earth has lost a great man but heaven has gained an incredible angel. Rest in peace Bob

The world will never be the same indeed after the loss of this remarkable physician and person. He has certainly shaped the way I practice medicine, and i'm certain that he's using those darn beloved index cards right now. Thank you. I am honored to have had the opportunity to experience your teachings, your kindness, and your compassion Dr. Kanter (BK). Heaven is all too lucky to have you.
With Love,

I have truly missed Bob since he retired from Upstate. I will miss talking baseball with him. He was a very wise old soul. He surely lived a good life. Prayers for all who knew him, especially his family. Sherri Clarry

Dr. Kanter was an incredibly kind and talented physician who cared for three of my children in the pediatric PICU. He taught me that healing can be a slow and arduous process at times and a rapid amazingly simple process at other times. He will be deeply missed.

I never had the privilege of meeting Bob, I feel as though I got to know him a little through his wife and children. So many great stories.
My heart is with your loving and wonderful family.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” -
