Henry C. Sienkiewicz Obituary

Henry C. Sienkiewicz passed away October 4 ,2024, 3 months shy of his 102nd birthday.


Born in Syracuse to the late John and Michalina on January 4,1923, he grew up on the


predominantly Polish West Side. As a youth he was active in sports and served as a


lifeguard at Frazer pool. At age 19 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps (later known as 8th


Air Force) and trained as a Bombardier. Stationed at Grafton Underwood, England,


Henry flew 36 missions over Europe in WW II. Returning to Syracuse after the war, he


married Helen “Linta “Nosewicz on June 2,1945, they settled and raised two children.


During their 53 years of marriage, Henry and Helen travelled the U.S. and Europe,


attending Federal Credit Union conferences and annual 384 th Bomb Group reunions.


As a Syracuse Firefighter Henry received the Arthur Jenkins Medal for bravery and


heroism in 1956. After 31 years of service, he retired as a Captain in 1982. He was active


in several organizations: an assistant patrol leader of Boy Scout troop #76, member


Polish Heritage Club, member of Local #280 Retired Firefighters, president of Syracuse


Fire Department Credit Union, Board member of Syracuse Polish Home, and a member


of the Polish Legion of American Veterans.


A lifelong communicant of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he served as a


trustee, cofounded Sacred Heart Bingo, served as an usher, Holy Name Society member,


and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Sacred Heart Council 6282 and Assembly


1725.


 


Several years after his wife's passing, Henry met his partner, Kate, and they continued to


enjoy travel at home and abroad with Sacred Heart Seniors and the 384th Bomb Group


reunions.


 


Henry was predeceased by his wife Helen” Linta” in 1999, siblings; Bruno and Josephine


son-in law, Fran Bukowski, several nieces, and nephews.


Surviving is his partner of 15 years Kathleen McDonald Cahill, her 8 siblings. 5 children,


13 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild; son Ron (Eileen), daughter Sandra Bukowski (Bill


Peverly), grandchildren; Scott (Amanda), Kevin (Rebecca), Jessica, Danielle Sienkiewicz,


Chris (Mandi Mulhern) Bukowski, Catherine Bukowski (Jonathon Dworin), 6 great


grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, several nieces, great nieces, nephews, and


many wonderful friends.


 


Calling hours are 4 to 7PM  Friday, October 11, 2024, Hollis Funeral Home 1105 West


Genesee St. Syracuse, NY 13204.


 


Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday October 12, 2024, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 927 Park Ave. Syracuse, NY13204.


 


Burial with Honors will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Geddes.
