Obituary of Anna Marie Kogut

Anna Marie Kogut 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 30 surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Stanley Kogut, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage, laughter and love. Born on the north side of Syracuse in 1928, she was the daughter of Anthony DeSantis and Mary Aiello DeSantis. She graduated from North High in 1946 and Powelson Business Institute. She retired from the City of Syracuse where she worked for the Assessment Department for 26 years, having served with distinction under three mayors. In her capacity as an Administrative Assistant, she was often called upon for her shorthand skills for various city commissioners. Anna Marie was a long-time parishioner of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, where she served as a lector. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus #6282, Ladies Auxiliary, and a member and treasurer of the Mothers Club. Anna Marie was also involved with the Neighborhood Watch Groups of Syracuse and served as a treasurer. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading thrillers and mysteries, and was an avid crossword and sudoku puzzler. Her skill in the kitchen was enhanced by adding a variety of Polish dishes to her traditional Italian cooking. She also was a good bowler having scored numerous over 200 games in the ten years she bowled in a women's league at the Ukrainian National Bowling Center, where she also served as President. She is survived by her eldest daughter Karen (Richard) Galloway of Syracuse, Dianne Kogut of Raleigh, NC, Gail (Arvin) Maniktala of Raleigh, NC, granddaughters Tracy (Chris) Bottrill, Deborah (Daniel) DeLorenzo, Adrienne Maniktala of Raleigh, NC and grandson, Varen Maniktala of Raleigh, NC. She has two great grandchildren, Hayden and Gracie Bottrill. Anna Marie is also survived by her sister Louise Claps of Syracuse, several nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins. "She is an inspiration as a strong, smart, talented, and independent woman" was a common quote used by many to describe her at her big 90th birthday celebrated by her family. Calling hours will be held at Hollis Funeral Home, 1105 West Genesee St., Syracuse on Friday evening, July 5 from 4-6 pm. A Mass of Christian of burial will be celebrated on Saturday at The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at 9:30 am with entombment in Woodlawn Mausoleum, next to her husband Stanley. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Basilica of the Sacred Heart’s Preservation Fund, 927 Park Ave., Syracuse, NY 13204.
