Obituary of Donald R Lakie

Donald R Lakie, 88, of East Syracuse passed away peacefully on September 20th, 2023.  He was born on February 14th, 1935 to the late Walter & Genevieve (Jean) Suboski-Witkowski.  The youngest of four, they would later take the last name of their stepfather Lloyd Lakie.

 

After graduating from North High School, Donald enlisted in the US Army, serving from 1953-1957 as a communication specialist during the Korean War. After his service, he joined the US Marine Reserve Corps from 1957-1958.

 

He married the love of his life, Barbara Dunlap on August 17th, 1968.  Together they raised four children.  He enjoyed coaching baseball, and anything military related.  He also enjoyed reading military books, building model airplanes and watching historical documentaries.

 

A machinist, he worked many years for OM Edwards before retiring at the Carrier Corporation.

 

Donald is predeceased by his wife of 47 years Barbara, his brothers Robert and Jack Lakie, his sister Dorothy, sons in law Scott Gale and Rick Fitzgerald, and daughter in law Melissa Lakie.

 

Donald is survived by his children Eric, Laurie and Brian, as well as his stepdaughter Tina.  Four grandchildren - Alexander, Abigail, Olivia and Bailey along with several nieces and nephews.

 

Services and Burial with Honors will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel 4069 Howlett Hill Road Syracuse NY 13215, where he will be laid to rest with his wife.
