Sister Mary Augustine Worhach, OP (Pearl Worhach) 101 years old, passed away  while in the loving care of the Teresian House for the Elderly, in Albany, NY. She was admitted on July 11th, 2018 where together with six of her Dominican sisters lived until her peaceful death on August 3rd, 2023.

 

Sister enjoyed talking about her childhood at Mt Carmel, Pennsylvania, where she was born November 13th, 1921. Pearl was a woman of great insight and intelligence.

She launched her career with the US Navy where she served as one of the waves which afforded her trips to many countries throughout Europe. During one such visit to Southwestern France at the famous pilgrimage site of Lourdes she claimed to have received her religious call to the Contemplative Life.

 

In 1954, at the “late” age of 33 years, Pearl followed her call to religious life and was admitted as the first postulant to the Monastery of the Perpetual Rosary on 802 court St, Syracuse, NY where she lived her vocation as a Dominican Contemplative nun, in service to the Order, the Church and anyone calling or visiting the monastery for prayerful support. In 2018, she and the members of her community, became  members of the Monastery of Mary the Queen, 15635 Greenridge Road, Girard, Illinois after the suppression of their original monastery.

 

Sister Mary Augustine is survived by one of her siblings (six), Dorothy Bodick of Lewes, Delaware; three nephews, Timothy Bodick, wife, Terry also of Lewes, Delaware, Joe Bodick, Phoenix, Ar.,  Paul Bodick, wife Wendy, Boulder, Co.; one niece, Jeanne (Worhach) Zito, husband Darrell of Annapolis, Md., and Russell G. Worhach of York, Pa. ; one grandniece, Kayla Zito, and two grandnephews, Bryce and Nathan Zito.

 

Funeral Services: 9:30 AM Friday at the Basilica of The Sacred Heart of Jesus where a Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by Rector, Fr. Andrew Baranski.

 

Burial St. Mary’s Cemetery, Syracuse New York.
