Obituary of Noel Roy Files
After a courageous battle, Noel Roy Files’ last call was on October 2, 2022, with his family at his side. Noel was a “Guy’s Guy,” who loved unconditionally and was always ready to enjoy the finer things that life had to offer. He loved playing golf, watching S.U. Basketball and Football (thanks to Henry Centor for keeping Noel in orange gear for years) and spending weekends with friends at numerous watering holes. Noel’s favorite pastime, though, was being with family. He loved spending time with his wife Daryl, daughters Karen, (Richard), Noelle, Shannon (Adam), Heather (and no Heather, there was NOT a favorite), grandchildren Desiree (Stephen), Jake, Cooper, great-grandson Stephie, Texas family, cousins, and nieces and nephews. Noel’s sister Joanie was his shining light and they enjoyed many a glass of wine together before she passed. Each member of his family has held a special place in the HUGE heart of “Mr. Love that Hairdo.”Noel was raised in Lyncourt in a Catholic Family, and was an altar boy, but from preschool, Noel started to make a name for himself. If you knew Noel, you probably heard the story of his little red wagon that his father Howard and Mother Millie confiscated. Many remember Noel’s 50th birthday roast at Bellevue Country Club, but we can’t tell the stories here, sorry.
Noel had a career with G E, pin setting at Lyncourt Bowling, and bartending at Walter Whites in Fairmount. He always dreamed of owning his own neighborhood bar and eventually owned a few. The Parkview was the first bar to record softball and basketball and show the games after on large screens. Noel later owned Grabbers on Warren Street across from the Hotel Syracuse. Many watched the big screens there before they were popular and later ate chicken wings for 10 cents each at O’Learys. Those were the days! Noel has had many names. Among them: Roli Poli the Happy Fat Man, The Legend of Warren Street, Mr. Money Bags, Mr. Jingle, Dad, Pops, Gramps, Great Grampa, and Sweetie. His mom would sometimes refer to him as “that is YOUR son, Howard.” She never thought Noel would make it past the tender age of 40, but he proved her wrong! Noel celebrated his 84th birthday on September 21, 2022.
Noel’s wife Daryl, of 47 years, met Noel, in of all places- a Bar! Patrons made bets that this would never last. HA! They fooled everyone!
Noel was a veteran and served in the Air Force. Our family would like to thank the Veterans Administration Hospital for the love and attention bestowed on our Pops. We will forever be grateful.
To honor Noel’s wishes, there will be no services.
Instead, we request that all of Noel’s golfing buddies, bar room pals, family and friends, raise a glass and toast Noel with a GRABBER! Make sure it has “an ample amount of whipped cream” and ALWAYS remember “don’t kill the booze with the coffee!!”
