April 16, 2014 Joyce Denice Vanderwege died in her sleep on April 16 at Fahey Rehabilitation (Loretto). She was born on July 25,1928 in Savannah, New York and lived in the Syracuse area most of her life.Joyce is survived by her loving children, Maureen Harrington O'Neill of Syracuse, James M. Harrington of Goveurner and Michael S. Harrington of Sarasota. She is also survived by her loving and adored grandchildren Mae Harrington O'Neill and Michael Harrington,Jr as well as by extended friends and family.Over the years Joyce was employed as a secretary for her father's business (Van Transport Lines), as a hostess at The Yates Hotel, as a matron for the Sheriff's Department, as a truck driver for the railroad and as the manager of the White Front Grill.Joyce was a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross, the Veteran's Administration, Lighthouse and the Special Olympics. She loved theater, was a longstanding member of the VFW, a wonderful gardener and a truly fantastic baker - her brownies and Christmas sugar cookies provided particular joy. Joyce was a strong, perseveringly individual; a woman of conviction, humor and opinions. She loved infinitely and was loved more than any words can describe. Her family will remember her and feel her in every field of flowers, with the sweet taste of a cookie, with the warmth of a fire and in every kiss, hug, smile or held hand.Her family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff on the fourth floor at Fahey Rehab and the staff at the Upstate Anatomical Gift Program. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her name, may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, Central New York Chapter, 441 W. Kirkpatrick Street, Syracuse, New York 13204-1361.A flower ceremony and memorial service, to celebrate her life, will take place at The Palace Theater on Wednesday, April 23rd from 5-8pm.
