Obituary of Gertraude Kowalewski
Gertraude Kowalewski, 93 passed away at her home in Syracuse. Born in Pirmasens Germany into a family with four brother and two sisters. She met and married her future husband Edward who was serving in the US Army and stationed in post war Germany. Gert raised a family with two sons while leading the life obliged of an Army family. She created home in and around many Army posts across the US and in Europe. Postings in New Mexico were among her favorites and she often delighted in telling stories of living in beautiful and very rural west. Syracuse became a permanent home base when her husband retired from the Army.
The later parts of her life were filled with family, puzzles and a love of flowers and reading. She spent much time at the family second home on Oneida Lake while Dad, family and friends were fishing. She traveled occasionally and was able to visit family living away and to revisit former Army homes sites through the years. She and her family were long time members of Transfiguration Church in Syracuse.
Surviving are her two sons Edward and Paul, granddaughters Aubrey Picciano, Allison Kavanaugh and great granddaughter Olivia Picciano. Other surviving family include nieces Carol Wisowaty, Donna Augustin Annie Milewski-Craner and nephews Robert Carlton, and John, Richard, James, Paul Milewski
Calling Hours: 5 to 7PM on Wednesday, June 23rd, at Hollis Funeral Home 1105 West Genesee St Syracuse.
Funeral Services: Thursday 11 AM Transfiguration Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
