Frederick L. Franke, III, 70, of Auburn, NY, passed away on 29 January 2019, at the Syracuse VA Hospital, after a brief battle with cancer.  Fred was born in Philadelphia, PA on 12 August 1948 to the late Frederick L. Franke, Jr. and the late Anne (Van Zandt) Franke.  He was a 1966 graduate of Neshaminy Senior High School in Langhorne, PA. Following his graduation, Fred enlisted in the United States Army, where he trained at the U.S. Army Southeastern Signal School in Ft. Gordon, Georgia.  He proudly served in The Signal Corps, assigned to the 725th Maintenance Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, where he supported Aviation Operations in Củ Chi, Vietnam from April 1967 to April 1968.  A veteran of the Vietnam War, Fred was instrumental in his work and support to the Veterans’ Outreach Center in Levittown, PA.  Before moving to Auburn, NY, Fred was an active member of the Jesse Soby American Legion Post #148, in Langhorne, PA.  He was most recently an active member of the VFW Post #1975; American Legion Post #1324, and the Frank Calimeri Post #9, all in Auburn, NY.  He also enjoyed fishing and was an avid motorcycle enthusiast.Fred is survived by three sisters, Anne “Nancy” Holderbaum (Bob) of Fredericksburg, VA; Glenna Franke of Churchville, PA; Margaret Franke and one brother, Paul Franke (Jill) of Gilbert, AZ; two uncles, Raymond Franke (Margie) and Thomas Franke (Joan) as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anne Franke, and his only son, Frederick Marshall Franke. An interment and memorial service are planned for the springtime in Bath National Cemetery Bath, NY.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund in honor and memory of Fred’s son.  The Fred Franke Scholarship Fund Marymount University Office of Development 2807 North Glebe Road Arlington, VA 22207.
