May 17, 2016 RAYMOND W HACKBARTH born Syracuse, NY, September 5, 1920, passed May 17, 2016. Only a brief hospitalization interrupted his nearly 70 years of living in Syracuse. Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jane Elizabeth Hackbarth after nearly 64 years of wedded bliss and his brother John Francis Hackbarth. Raymond is survived by his son Raymond W. Hackbarth, Jr. of Fallbrook, CA; his daughter Nancy Jane Murray of Kent, Ohio; grandchildren, Amanda Jane Thornton and Jason Murray; and great grandchildren, Logan Howell, Gwen Thornton and Matthew Thornton.. Raymond graduated at the top of his Solvay High School class. During those years he won the Onondaga County Spelling Bee and rose to the level of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. After High School he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. After his service he attended Syracuse University Maxwell School receiving his B.S. degree, magna cum laude in 1949 and his Juris Doctorate, magna cum laude in 1951. He was Beta Gamma Sigma; Phi Delta Phi; member, Justinian Society. Raymond clerked for the Appellate Division, Fourth Department in Rochester, NY. until 1954 when he joined the law firm of Mackenzie, Smith, Lewis, Michell & Hughes in Syracuse where he spent the rest of his career. During his tenure with the Mackenzie firm, he was coordinating counsel to New York State Senate Finance Committee on revisions of the Civil Practice Act from 1961-62. He was a member of the Committee to Advise and Consult with the Judicial Conference on the Civil Practice Law and Rules 1964-83. Trustee, Supreme Court Library at Syracuse, 1970-83. Member, panel of arbitrators, American Arbitration Association. Member, Board of Visitors, Syracuse University College of Law, 1972-83. Member, Grievance Committee, Fifth Judicial District, 1974-83. Committee on Character and Fitness, Fourth Judicial Department, 1975-83. Syracuse and Onondaga County Planning Agency, 1978-83. Member, 1978- and Chairman, 1978-83, Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. Board of Directors, Onondaga County Bar Foundation, 1976-83. Chairman, Judiciary Committee, 1972-74. President, 1975; Director 1966-68, 1974-76. Distinguished Lawyer, 1984; New York State (member: Executive Committee, 1985-; House of Delegates, 1975-76; 1979-83) and American (member, House of Delegates, 1982) Bar Associations. Fellow: New York Bar Foundation; American Foundation. Recently, Raymond took pleasure in being fondly remembered by his peers of the Onondaga County Bar Association for his years of service.” Donations: In Memory of Raymond W.
