Thomas Cawley passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with lung cancer at
his home on Tuesday, February 10 at age 67. Born in Syracuse, NY, on April 12, 1958, to the late Janet (Cawley) Powers, Tom was the third of five children.
Tom (or “Papa Tom” as many knew him) grew up in the Valley, making many lifelong friends
and lasting memories. Known for being a jack-of-all-trades, Tom was always the first to
volunteer his time to help with any project, whether it was plumbing, carpentry, or
electrical work.
Tom was a proud friend of Dr. Bob and Bill W. for over 25 years. His sobriety was hard-earned and a major source of pride for himself and a testament to his deep devotion to his family. During his time with the program, he touched the lives of many and dedicated his time, energy, and care to giving back to the community that gave to him.
After being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, Tom fought with unwavering bravery
and grace. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and generosity that lives on in
everyone who had the honor of knowing him.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Cynthia; his siblings, Lynn (Steve Rice), Mary (Rich),
Gail (Tim), and Chris (Heather); his children, Gregory, Ryan (Nicole), Miguel, Sean (Isabel),
Jessica, and Kimberly; his niece, Allison; his nephew David; his twelve grandchildren; and
his great-grandchildren.
With Tom’s departure, we remember a life filled with immense love. His presence will be
sorely missed. We let go of a beloved son, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, and
friend to many. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the love, joy, and memories we
shared.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, February 16, at 1 p.m. at the Valley American
Legion, with memorial service to follow at 2 p.m.
