Mark Anthony Miller, beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend, passed away on December 13, surrounded by the love of family and friends.
From his earliest days, Mark was cherished by parents, cousins, and extended family who delighted in his wit and warmth. He inspired his mother and later cared for her tenderly, helping both parents learn to accept love in all its forms.
As a brother, Mark’s humor turned ordinary moments into shared laughter. Later in life, he discovered his brother Dave and embraced Dave’s family with joy, stepping naturally into the role of Uncle that he had long hoped to be. He shared a sisterly bond with Noël, his brother Tom’s wife, and was a confidant and companion to his cousins, often the “cool uncle” who brought comfort and joy.
Mark’s passions included musicals, costumes, gaming, floating in the lake, and above all, music and art. He found joy in inclusive communities that celebrated individuality.
In Syracuse, Mark’s community was the Syracuse Gay and Lesbian Chorus, where he invested his time, energy, and heart. He served in many roles, most memorably as chairman of the board, and was affectionately remembered as the “Ghost of Boards Past.” More than a leader, he was a friend and confidant, cherished by chorus members who surrounded him with love in his final days.
Mark’s final days were filled with listening, laughter, and heartfelt conversation. He faced illness with courage, always mindful of easing the burden on those he loved.
He leaves an example for us all to follow: Enjoy life with the people who enjoy you. And remember—you were his favorite, but don’t tell the others.
