Longtime North Syracuse resident, Lois Derbyshire Benevento, died on July 13, 2025 at Upstate University Hospital. She will be missed by many. Lois was a strong advocate for human rights and attended numerous rallies and demonstrations in the Syracuse area over the years. Although Lois was 95 years old, and unable to walk without assistance, she attended her last protest in June, arriving on a boat operated by her caregiver (Patti Waelder) and her husband. Lois worked several jobs throughout her life, but she was most dedicated and proud of her work in the addiction field for Crouse Hospital. Her early years at Crouse were in the Outpatient Addiction Services. Lois was responsible for starting the Recovery Challenge Program at this service, which provided addiction counseling for developmentally challenged adults struggling with substance use. In later years, she worked for Crouse’s inpatient addiction services at Commonwealth Place and remained there well into her 80’s. Lois provided stellar support for patients and families and was recognized frequently. She also worked many years as a counselor advocate for Jail Ministry. An avid reader and advocate for lifelong learning, Lois completed a master’s degree at Syracuse University while caring for her family and working full time.

Lois is survived by her son, George Daniels, grandchildren Samantha Daniels, Jacqueline Daniels, great-grandchildren Brayden, Casey, Jordan, Giovanni, and Katerina, and three beautiful

cats. She is predeceased by her son, Victor, husband Philip Benevento, her parents Harold and Mabel Derbyshire, brother Dean Derbyshire, and numerous fur babies.

A private burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humane Association of CNY, 4915 West Taft Road, Liverpool, NY 13088. A Celebration of Life is planned for a future date.
