Obituary of William Francis Stankewicz
William F. Stankewicz, Jr, 80, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at Crouse Hospital. He was the widower of Maryann Stankewicz (Synakowski), to whom he was married for 44 years, the loving father of Bill Stankewicz (Shannon Steelsmith) and Monica Stankewicz, and a beloved Papa to his grandson, Max Stanger. Bill is also survived by his brother, Robert Stankewicz (Patricia) and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Syracuse (Solvay), Bill was the son of William and Elizabeth. He graduated from Solvay High School in 1962. He was a faithful employee of Bristol Laboratories for almost 40 years.
In addition to work and family, Bill was an avid sports lover and worked as a referee for high school football and basketball. He was recognized for his dedication and professionalism as a member of the NYS Association of Certified Football Officials from 1967-2002. As far as baseball, Bill was a player and umpire in his early years and an unwavering and avid fan of the New York Yankees. He was also a lifelong member of the Solvay Tigers.
Bill was also a member and supporter of the Syracuse Polish Home, where he served as Vice President for several years, and then President from 2002-2003. He was so proud when he was titled a “Lifetime Member” of his beloved club. The friendships and family that he formed at the Polish Home will never be forgotten. Bill was “Uncle Bill” to all who knew him and he was always good with a joke or a fun story.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 24, 4-6pm at Hollis Funeral Home, 1105 West Genesee St., Syracuse. The funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 25 at 9:30am at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 927 Park Avenue, Syracuse, with interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Syracuse Polish Community Foundation.
