Obituary of Dorothy Pliszczak

Dorothy (Zamojski) Pliszczak, 93, a lifelong resident of Solvay, NY, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025. The youngest of six siblings, Dorothy was born in the family house in Solvay to the late Bronislaw and Stefania (Grabowski) on May 7, 1931. Dorothy graduated from Solvay High School in 1949 and was a lifelong member of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Dorothy’s career as an administrative secretary began after the war when the Easy Washer Company returned to manufacturing washing machines instead of guns. After they closed, she worked at P&C Food Markets, Inc. in the corporate office before giving birth to her daughter.

When she was ready to re-enter the workforce, she found her perfect job a mile from home at the New York State Fair in the Contract/Finance Department. Her over 40 year career began with director Bernie Potter in the late 1960’s. She retired in 2009, at the age of 78, attributing the longevity of her career to enjoying her job, the people she worked with, and the many vendors who became friends. During that time, she worked for several wonderful State Fair directors including Tom Young, Wayne Gallagher, and Peter Cappuccilli.

Dorothy enjoyed traveling, shopping, knitting, reading, gardening, and watching SU basketball. She travelled all over Europe, met all the Pliszczak relatives, and even visited some Zamojski castles. With her daughter, she shopped and saw many historic sites throughout the US while attending many dental conventions. She was well known for her variety of homemade cookies, affectionately called Dot cookies, which she shared with relatives, friends, coworkers at her office, patients at her daughter’s office, and numerous dental meetings.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Zygmunt, in 2005, her parents, sisters Nellie Nozynski and Irene Zamojski, and brothers Henry, Zygmund, and Alexander Zamojski.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Dr. Janice Pliszczak, numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great, great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 1st from 9am to 11am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am at St. Charles of Borromeo Church, 501 S. Orchard Road in Syracuse.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at St. Camillus and SUNY Community for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 927 Park Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13204 or to the Solvay Volunteer Fire Department, 1925 Milton Avenue, Solvay, NY 13209.
